Three crucified figures on crosses, with a large crowd and soldiers, golden background.
This horizontal rectangular painting depicts a crowded scene of three crucifixions against a textured golden background. Three figures are nailed to wooden crosses, positioned across the upper third of the composition. The central figure, on a slightly taller cross, has a pale green body and wears a white loincloth. Two angels with blue and pink wings float near his head. The figure on the left cross also has a pale green body and a white loincloth. The figure on the right cross has a lighter skin tone and a white loincloth. Dark green rocky mounds are visible beneath the side crosses, contrasting with the golden sky. The lower two-thirds of the painting are densely populated with a large crowd of people and soldiers on horseback. On the far left, a group of figures, some appearing to be women, are gathered, some appearing to support a woman in a blue robe and red cloak. Several figures in this group have halos. In the center, directly beneath the central cross, are numerous standing figures and some on horseback. One figure in a long golden robe stands prominently. To the right, a group of soldiers on horseback, clad in armor and holding spears, are depicted. Some shields are visible, one bearing the red letters "S.P.Q.R." A red banner with the same inscription, "S.P.Q.R.", is visible on the far right. The figures wear garments in a variety of colors including reds, blues, greens, browns, and whites. Many figures, particularly on the left, are depicted with halos. The ground beneath the crowd is a dark, earthy tone.
