A wide canal scene featuring a large domed church, waterfront buildings, and numerous boats
A wide canal scene unfolds under a light, hazy sky. The upper third of the canvas is a pale, yellowish-beige sky with subtle hints of brighter light. The middle ground features a long stretch of buildings lining the waterfront. On the far right, a prominent, large church dominates, characterized by its multiple grey domes, a tall central spire, and an intricately detailed facade of light-colored stone. Small figures are visible on the steps leading up to the church and along the adjacent waterfront. To the left of the church, a long, multi-story building with a reddish-brown lower section and lighter upper stories extends along the shore. Further left, a squarish building with a small, ornate tower topped by a finial stands at what appears to be a dock. Behind this structure, numerous tall masts of various boats are visible. A small red flag flies from a mast on the far left edge of the painting. The lower two-thirds of the canvas are filled with the murky, greenish-brown water of the canal. Scattered across the water are many small, dark boats, most appearing to be gondolas, each with one or two figures actively rowing or standing. Several larger, darker boats with masts and sails are moored closer to the buildings. Small groups of people are also visible on the land along the waterfront, standing or moving.
