Winter landscape: figures on frozen water, a village, and a cloudy sky
The painting depicts a wide winter landscape with a frozen body of water in the foreground and a village along its bank in the midground. The sky occupies the upper half of the canvas, transitioning from a light, muted blue at the top to a warmer, hazy brown and orange closer to the horizon, with large, soft clouds. In the midground, a row of houses with steep, gabled roofs lines the right bank of the frozen water. Many roofs are covered in white snow, while others show reddish-brown tiles. Chimneys rise from some of the houses. A tall, bare tree stands among the houses on the right. To the left of the houses, a few smaller buildings and bare trees are visible, along with tall, dry reeds growing along the bank. Several boats are moored or lie on the ice near the bank, including two larger ones on the far right. Further left, in the distance, more figures are visible on the ice, and faint land masses extend into the background. The foreground is dominated by the frozen surface, which appears reflective and has darker patches. Numerous figures are scattered across the ice. On the far left, two individuals push or pull a low, sled-like cart laden with items. Towards the center, a group of adults and children are engaged in various activities, some appearing to skate. One adult holds the hand of a small child. A small, dark bowl rests on the ice near this group. On the right side of the foreground, more figures, including adults and children, are also on the ice.
