A woman in a patterned kimono stands beside a koto, with calligraphy on a scroll
A vertical scroll painting depicts a full-length image of a woman in a layered kimono, standing slightly right of center against a plain, light tan background. Her head is tilted downwards and to the left. She has dark hair styled in an elaborate bun, adorned with gold hairpins. Her face is pale, with red lips and dark eyebrows. She wears a multi-layered kimono. The outermost layer is dark, possibly black or deep blue, and features a prominent pattern of peacock feathers with iridescent blue and green 'eyes' and gold accents. Beneath this, visible at the collar and sleeves, are layers of white fabric trimmed with red, and another layer with a green and light blue floral or geometric design. A wide, brown sash is wrapped around her waist. The kimono flares out at the bottom, revealing a red and white floral pattern, possibly cherry blossoms, on the lining. To the right of the woman, on the floor, rests a koto, a long, dark brown stringed instrument with a curved, lighter-colored bridge at one end and several small, white, movable bridges along its length. A small, dark, round object lies near the far end of the koto. On the left side of the scroll, several vertical lines of black calligraphy are visible. Below the calligraphy, near the woman's right shoulder, are two red square seals. The scroll is framed by decorative borders: a repeating pattern of gold and dark shapes at the top and bottom, and a lighter, patterned border along the sides.
