Still life with fruit, dead birds, and rabbits on a table, a column and drapery
A still life depicts an abundant arrangement of fruit, dead birds, and rabbits, rendered in monochromatic tones of grey, black, and white. In the left foreground, a large woven basket overflows with various fruits, including numerous clusters of grapes, apples, and peaches. More fruit spills onto the table surface, accompanied by leafy vines. In the center foreground, two dead birds with ruffled feathers lie on a draped white cloth. Below them, a large rabbit or hare with long ears is positioned. To the right of the birds, another rabbit or hare hangs upside down by its bound feet from a leafy branch, its body curving downwards. Behind the central arrangement, a large, fluted column rises on the right side. Dark, heavy drapery hangs from the upper left, sweeping across the top of the composition. In the far right background, a faint, multi-spired architectural structure, possibly a cathedral, is visible. Strong contrasts are present between the lighter tones of the fruit, white cloth, and hanging rabbit, and the darker tones of the background and drapery.
