Vertical painting: gnarled tree with red flowers, blue-green leaves, and lotus plants
This vertical painting depicts a natural scene with a prominent tree and aquatic plants. On the left, a large, gnarled tree trunk, rendered in dark grey and black washes, rises from the bottom edge, twisting and turning as it ascends. Its branches, delicate and thin, extend upwards and towards the right, adorned with numerous clusters of small, light blue-green leaves. Interspersed among the foliage are many bright red flowers, some fully open with visible petals, others appearing as tight buds. Below the tree and extending across the lower right portion of the painting are several large, roundish lotus leaves, also depicted in a light blue-green hue. Among these leaves and taller, thin green grasses are several white lotus flowers, some in full bloom with visible petals, and others partially open or as buds. The background is a light, unadorned wash, which contrasts with the detailed flora. In the upper right corner, vertical lines of black calligraphic text are present, accompanied by several small red seal impressions.
