Two figures in a boat on water surrounded by lily pads, one poling, one reclining
A monochrome ink painting on a light-colored, rectangular paper panel, framed by decorative borders. The central scene depicts two figures in a small boat on a body of water. The water is rendered in light gray washes, with numerous darker gray, rounded shapes resembling lily pads or lotus leaves scattered across its surface, particularly in the lower half of the composition. A narrow, dark gray boat is positioned slightly right of center, angled diagonally from the lower left towards the upper right. In the front half of the boat, a figure with a prominent dark beard and mustache reclines on their side, facing towards the left. This figure wears light-colored robes and rests their head on their right hand, which is propped on their knee. Their eyes are open, and their mouth is slightly agape. At the back of the boat, a second figure stands, facing away from the viewer, holding a long, thin pole vertically with both hands. This figure also wears light-colored robes. The pole extends upwards and slightly to the right, disappearing beyond the top edge of the central panel. The upper two-thirds of the painting are largely empty, rendered in a pale, uniform wash. In the upper right corner, there is a vertical line of dark characters, below which is a small, square red seal. The central panel is bordered by a narrow, dark brown band with a subtle pattern, followed by a wider, light blue-green border featuring a repeating golden floral or scroll motif.
