A vertical scroll painting depicting a river winding through mountains with trees and a small boat
This vertical scroll painting depicts a landscape rendered in ink and light colors on an off-white ground. The upper portion features a large, rounded mountain peak, primarily in light green and grey washes with dark ink outlines and accents. To its right, smaller, more distant mountains appear in soft blue-grey hues. In the upper right corner, vertical lines of black calligraphic text are visible, reading "竹雨溪山九日圖" followed by smaller characters and a red square seal mark. Below the mountains, a river winds through hills. The left bank is steep, covered with trees, some with dense, dark green foliage, and others with bare, reddish-brown branches. The right bank slopes gently, also dotted with trees. The river, rendered in light grey washes, flows from the upper right, widening as it descends towards the bottom of the composition. In the lower half of the painting, a narrow boat with three small figures is positioned in the middle of the river, slightly to the right of center. The figures are simply depicted, wearing light-colored garments, with one appearing to be poling the boat. Several dark, rounded rocks are scattered in the river in the lower left foreground. The water shows subtle ink lines suggesting gentle currents. A red square seal mark is also present in the lower left corner.
