Ink wash landscape with towering mountains, misty valleys, dense trees, a river, and a small boat
This vertical ink wash painting presents a monochromatic landscape of mountains, mist, and trees. The upper third features towering, craggy mountains rendered in varying shades of gray ink, from light washes to darker, textured strokes defining peaks and ridges. Wisps of lighter ink suggest mist or clouds partially obscuring the mid-sections of the mountains. In the upper right, a vertical column of black calligraphic text reads: "山中無曆日 寒盡不知年". Below this, additional calligraphic text reads: "庚子冬日寫於滬上", followed by "石廬". Below this entire block of text are two red square seals. Below the highest peaks, the landscape transitions into a valley where more mountains recede into the distance, softened by lighter ink washes. The middle ground is characterized by a dense cluster of trees on the right, some with full, dark foliage, others with bare, intricate branches. To the left of these trees, a wide body of water, possibly a river or lake, stretches horizontally. On the far side of the water, distant hills and a few small, simple structures with peaked roofs are visible. The lower third of the painting depicts the foreground near the water's edge. More trees, some with thick, gnarled trunks and sparse branches, stand prominently on the right and left banks. Patches of grass or reeds are depicted along the gently sloping ground near the water. In the lower left, a small, flat-bottomed boat with a single figure is visible on the water, moving towards the right.
