Two ink wash paintings: a seated figure with a broom and a standing figure with a scroll
This artwork consists of two vertical ink wash paintings, presented side-by-side. Each painting features a single figure rendered in shades of black, grey, and light reddish-brown on a light, off-white paper background. The top and bottom of each scroll have decorative borders with a black background and repeating gold floral patterns. The left scroll depicts a figure seated on a large, dark, irregular rock-like form, seen from the back and slightly turned to the right. The figure has short, dark hair and wears a loose, dark robe. A large, round object, possibly a straw hat or gourd, with a dark center and lighter, reddish-brown outer sections, is carried on their back. A dark-bristled broom rests on the ground near the bottom right of the figure. Faint, dark calligraphic text and two red square seals are visible in the upper left area of the scroll. The right scroll shows a standing figure, facing towards the left, with their body slightly angled towards the viewer. This figure has a round face, a prominent nose, and dark, disheveled hair. They wear a loose, dark robe, with lighter undergarments visible at the chest. A light-colored scroll or staff is tucked behind their back, extending upwards. A small, light-colored pouch hangs from their waist. Their feet, wearing simple sandals, are visible as they stand on or near a dark, irregular rock-like form. Faint, dark calligraphic text and two red square seals are visible in the upper right area of this scroll.
